Rocking the JHB Web2.0 conf
Presenting in JHB last week at the “Advancing Web2.0 for traditional media” was very lekker. I also bumped into the Primedia crew the night before at the hotel and had a couple of tequilas which always adds to the flava of a road trip.
It seems my pressie went down well with an audience of over 100 peeps from the marketing and publishing world. There was really a fantastic turnout and it’s encouraging to see growing interest in the subject matter. Even though it is long overdue.
On the graveyard shift I averaged 3.65/4 for presentation and 3.57/4 for content from the delegate feedback - which according to the organisers meant that I ranked in second place overall. Not too shabby considering the line-up - Matt Buckland, Vince Maher, Arthur Goldstuck, Allan Kent and Justin Hartman to name a few. It’s always good to know you did well when people have paid money to hear you speak.
My key objective was to offer the audience something that might just change the way they see the world and get them thinking - shifting paradigms is a healthy activity for anyone. So knowing that other speakers might focus on the blue sky I tried to highlight some of the heavy challenges on the media horizon.
My presentation is below but admittedly many of the slides may be cryptic without the commentary. As such each slide is possibly a blog post in itself - so over the next period I will pull out some of the slides and make posts about them where I think I have an interesting theory on a matter.
It’s always cool to challenge how you see the world - because it moves so fast.
Some of the key themes I spoke about:
- The reality of the SA web2.0 State of the nation
- Some learnings from the 24.com, Blueworld investment
- Managing innovation teams
- The types of people you want working in online vs traditional media
- Shifting marketing paradigms
- Shifting business models
- and who I think is missing the bus.
Please note that these are all my views and not the views of 24.com
